Item Description
This 4" by 4" small art quilt depicting a river is part of Leah Evan's "Quandrangle" series. The box is handmade papier mache and the fabric is hand-dyed.
A Madison-based textile artist, Leah makes quilts that feature a map which is hand-sewn in fine detail forming an almost abstract pattern. Evans uses appliqué, reverse appliqué, piecing, natural and synthetic dyeing, needle-felting, hand printing and a variety of embroidery to make each piece. She takes the imagery from maps, aerial photography and satellite images.
"Amid rivers, fields and isthmuses, Evans shows evidence of humankind’s effects on the landscape, from strip mines to pivot irrigation to light pollution. She keeps her commentary on environmental impact subtle, allowing viewers to come to their own conclusions."
From Katie Vaughn's article about Leah in the February 2010 issue of Madison Magazine. Read the rest of the article here.
