Item Description

Have you ever wondered how radio works or are you a radio lover who loves the technical side or things?  Here is the item for you or that special person who loves radio!

Six winning bidders will come on a tour of the station and a trip up to the Crest to see our brand new transmitter and learn how radio works from the insiders who make it happen!

Richard Towne has been General Manager at KUNM since 1994.  He started broadcasting 41 years ago and has worked in Arcata, Tucson, Grand Forks, Oshkosh, Tucson (again), Charleston, San Diego, Maseru, Mbabane, Guatemala City, Cairo, and Albuquerque.

At KUNM, Richard served as project director for the launch of KUNM's website and digital services, the addition of digital transmission, the massive facilities renovation of 2004/2005 and the the creation of four new stations in 2007/2008.  Richard invites you to come look at the newly created 96-track digital deluxe recording studio that KUNM just opened to support live music and performance broadcasting.

KUNM’s Chief Engineer Alex Williams is a professional broadcast engineer with years of experience in radio and communication engineering. While studying mechanical engineering at UNM, Alex began working for a regional radio engineering consultation firm. Working across the Southwest, Alex gained valuable experience while performing engineering duties for as many as 18 radio stations at a time. It was in this time that Alex realized that broadcast engineering was the field for him, and upon finishing university decided to make a career of it.

Taking the role of Chief Engineer for KUNM, Alex has responsibility for turning polished KUNM programming into radio across the state of New Mexico. With nine transmission sites covering most of the Northern half of the state, KUNM is dedicated to providing reliable and consistent service to its listeners. A full time engineer is an absolute necessity with such a wide network of transmitters to maintain.

KUNM utilizes state of the art broadcasting equipment to fulfill its goals. From the main transmitter atop Sandia Crest blasting 20,000+ watts of radio energy across the state to the digital studio-transmitter-link which shoots our programming from the studio to the main transmitter site in perfect clarity using little more power than an automobile remote, KUNM is at the forefront of radio technology. Using hypothetical physics modeling, Alex is able to plan expansion of KUNM’s transmission abilities in order to better serve key areas such as major highways and remote towns.

Alex invites you to come along for an inside look at what is involved in the technical side of broadcasting at KUNM’s studio and transmitter facility.
