Joel Fisher studied at Kenyon College in Ohio until 1969. In the same year he received a Thomas J. Watson Travelling Scholarship. He had his first solo exhibition in 1970 at the Whitney Museum - Art Resources Center in New York City. He has exhibited in Berlin, London, Paris, Amsterdam and Kassel. His works are, among others, in the collections of the Tate Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Berlin State Museums, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Moderna Museet Malmö, at the Arts Council of Great Britain in London and the Groningen Museum. He was a teacher at Bath Academy of Art in England and at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-arts de Paris. He currently teaches sculpture at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.

Joel Fisher has used unusual materials for his objects, collages and his "biomorphic sculptures." He took part in Documenta 5 in Kassel in 1972 in the Department of Individual mythologies with his "Hair Squares" from hair and nails and "SOAP " of butter and liquor. His work with paper has existed and coexisted with his painting and sculptural art, along with a serious body of writing, throughout his career.
