This checkerboard batik angel is a delightful Indonesian addition to your holiday angel collection. Hand-painted batik on wood, in black, red, silver and natural. Decorative only.

Batik painting on wood, like batik on fabric, is a centuries-old dyeing technique. First the artisan hand-traces an original design on the wood. The design is then hand-painted. Next, hot wax is applied where color is not required. The material is then dyed and the wax removed, leaving only the original design. This is repeated as many times as necessary with each color representing a separate dyeing and waxing process.

The Indonesian People’s Handicraft Foundation, or APIKRI, is an independent association of artisans. A nongovernment organization, APIKRI helps organize artisans and provides export marketing services, technical assistance, training and other supports.

The Indonesian People's Handicraft Foundation, or APIKRI, is an independent association of artisans. A nongovernment organization, APIKRI helps organize artisans and provides export marketing services, technical assistance, training and other supports. Most of APIKRI's artisans work in and around the city of Yogyakarta and Central Java, areas renowned for craft production. Benefits to artisans include savings programs, design development and access to microcredit loans for production or emergencies. APIKRI is owned by its members, with management accountable to members. It includes programs to build member capacity, promote fair trade and promote environmental conservation.

APIKRI was started in 1987 by 25 handicraft producers and Pekerti Foundation, an Indonesian alternative trade organization. APIKRI began in response to increased unemployment in and around Yogyakarta and Central Java. The organization is a member of Fair Trade Forum Indonesia and the International Fair Trade Association. APIKRI views fair trade as an instrument to achieve democracy in economic life.

All other items must be picked up at Access Tucson Community Media (124 E. Broadway Blvd—SE corner of Broadway and 6^th Ave). We are open Tuesdays 4pm-9pm, Fridays 2pm-10pm and Saturdays 2pm-10pm.

If you opt not to pick up, shipping and handling is paid for by the winner.

Please contact us if you need to make arrangements for pick up outside of building hours or if you want to add additional USPS services to your package like insurance, registered mail or signature confirmation, etc.
