Item Description

Own a beautiful piece of Huron River history. If you or someone you know loves maps, this special auction item just for you. A joint project between Stantec, HRWC and Grafaktri resulted in reproductions of the original Gardner Williams survey maps of the Huron River, circa 1909. This auction item is a 3' x 3' reproduction map of the river and surrounding lands, all the way from Argo pond to the U of M Arboretum in Ann Arbor, MI.

The Huron River Valley maps were originally made by Gardner Williams, a professor at the University of Michigan and consulting engineer. These maps, circa 1905-1909 most likely were produced to assist the Detroit Edison Company with developing hydroelectric projects along the Huron River Valley. While different survey instruments were employed in the early twentieth century, the fundamental method used at that time is still used today for most topographic surveys.

Item Special Note

Any shipping charges will be added to winning bid amount.

Stantec Consulting of Ann Arbor (Gardner Williams' former engineering firm now known as Stantec) recently donated the entire collection of original survey maps to HRWC, and we in turn asked the Bentley Library to archive them, and make electronic scans. Grafaktri then used the electronic scans to enhance and reproduce various sections of these beautiful survey maps.
