When the Danish String Quartet started out, they called themselves
the Young Danish String Quartet. These days the “Young” has been dropped from the name, but the foursome is still full of youthful dynamism – a quality that was on display when they made their first appearance at Coastal Concerts in 2010. It was clear then that these guys were flat out having a good time, and that sense of fun continues to be their trademark: “We are simply your friendly
neighborhood string quartet with above average amounts of beard.” But don’t be fooled. This “friendly neighborhood” ensemble is racking up impressive honors and accolades.
Most recently the quartet received a prestigious three-year appointment to the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s Two program. This recognition comes at a time when the group’s performances are drawing high praise: “These shaggy haired Danes, who look as though they could be manning some inscrutable boutique in deepest Brooklyn, seemed to sing, dance, strut, and glide their way through the music” (Alex Ross, The New Yorker). “One of the
most powerful performances of [Beethoven’s] Opus 132 I’ve heard live or on disc” (Vivien Schweitzer, The New York Times).
