Founded in 1971, Florida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute is a research community of marine scientists, engineers, educators and other professionals focused on Ocean Science for a Better World. The institute drives innovation in ocean engineering, at-sea operations, drug discovery and biotechnology from the oceans, coastal ecology and conservation, marine mammal research and conservation, aquaculture, ocean observing systems and marine education.
In its earliest days, FAU’s Harbor Branch was fueled by the drive to overcome the technical challenges of ocean research, and Innovative Technology Development remains both a research theme and an enabling element of our other three research themes: Ocean Exploration, Understanding Marine Ecosystem Function and Wise Use of Marine Resources.
FAU Harbor Branch also is home to the NOAA Cooperative Institute for Ocean Exploration, Research & Technology, which explores and studies the nation’s ocean frontiers using innovation and cutting-edge technologies.
Areas of specialization include coral reef and estuarine systems, harmful algal blooms and marine botany. Marine mammal research programs study population health and behavioral ecology to gain insight into topics such as environmental toxins and pathogens, food web dynamics and adaptation to ecosystem change.
