Artist Statement:
I earn a living as a stone carver, and have been able to maintain my independent business since 1993. I am honored to have work across the country, for universities, cities, individuals, and institutions. During all this time I have made Art for myself, after a full day of working on commissions, in stone, bronze, wood, steel, glass, paint, and pastel. I have also recorded four CDs of original music; the last two CDs have been concurrent with the pastel abstractions, and were professionally recorded and engineered in a studio with a beautiful grand piano.
The abstractions, as a series, follow a long and ongoing drawing relationship I have had with my backyard view of beautiful rural Ohio. I have filled six sketchbooks with landscapes drawn from life, from my back porch, beginning in 2005. The landscapes I see have as yet to be infertile material for drawing, but I am grateful to have begun this new series of abstractions on canvas. I am now free to draw at any scale I want. Taking the drawings off the paper and onto the canvas is the culmination of a lifetime of drawing, and I am thrilled to follow where it leads.
