Item Description

Marco Abraham was 18 years old when he lived through the massacre. He realized he was witnessing a horrific chapter in the history of the Middle East, and vowed to tell his story. Shortly after leaving Shatila camp following the massacre, he wrote down his entire experience so as not to forget any of the details.

Amid massive Israeli civilian protests over the possibility of their country’s involvement in the Sabra and Shatila massacre, the Israeli government created the Kahan Commission to investigate. The Kahan Commission concluded that, “the Minister of Defense (Ariel Sharon) bears personal responsibility.” The transcripts of this investigation have never been released. It is hoped that the Israeli government will release these files this September, the 25th anniversary of the massacre. The release of these transcripts will be anticipated by millions of people worldwide.

Marco Abraham, born in the Palestine refugee camp of Shatila, was raised to hate and fear Americans as his country's "number one enemy," followed by Israel. Several years following his survival of the massacre, he was required to come to the United States on a job related assignment. He came with trepidation and fear of what Americans would do to him. What he saw when he arrived was that Americans were not evil, they were not trying to kill him, they in fact lived blessed lives of freedom and safety—working and caring for their families, having food and homes and enjoying their lives without living in fear. He was raised, as many middle eastern people, with a lie—an unrealistic and profound hatred and fear of Americans.
