Item Description

Hand-painted one-of-a-kind silk chiffon scarf by renown New Orleans artist Kathy Schorr. The scarf is 10" x 46.5".

New Orleans native, Kathy Schorr, received a B.F.A. from Southeastern Louisiana University and an Associate's Degree in Fashion Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, but it was while living in Paris, that she discovered the art of silk painting. Kathy started working for a small company, PierreChris, where five of them produced, from conception to finished product, a line of hand-painted silk scarves which sold throughout Europe. Returning to New Orleans in 1993, Kathy started designing and producing her own scarves and wall pieces. She began exhibiting her work in the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in 1994 and hasn't stopped painting since. Her work can be found in galleries and museum shops throughout the country, and she has ventured into the field of textile design by creating the fabric for the official "How-Ah-Ya" New Orleans Jazz Festival shirt for the past 14 years and creating designs for Jim Thompson Thai Silk Co. in Bangkok. Kathy¿s main silk painting technique is called the ¿Gutta-Resist¿ method. Gutta, a rubber-based substance from the gutta-percha tree in Indonesia, is used to draw the design on to the silk and it penetrates the silk, creating barriers. It is these barriers that keep the silk dye colors from merging together. Kathy is the sister of Suzi Spear, who is a New Roads mom.
