Item Description
Dr. Jeffrey Birnbaum, long standing member of Kane Street Synagogue, will give a salon relating his experiences as the “in house” physician at Coney Island USA’s Sideshows By The Seashore. Dr. Birnbaum has interviewed a wide variety of sideshow performers born with congenital anomalies who use their bodies as a means of expressing their own commentary on disabilities in American society and how they have been treated in ways both good and bad by the medical community. Dr. Birnbaum, a pediatrician practicing in Brooklyn, considers the ethical questions posed to pediatricians when infants are born with these congenital anomalies and how their own biases towards what is “normal” impacts upon the long term outcomes and quality of life of the individuals who are “born different”.
Date: Saturday May 31th at 8:30 pm at the Carroll Gardens home of Dr. Jeffrey Birnbaum and Ariel Krasnow
582 Henry Street.
