Item Description
Dr. Jeffrey Birnbaum, Kane Street member, brilliant raconteur and pediatrician who specializes in working with HIV+ adolescents at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, will give a salon on the topic of his work with transgender youth in New York City. His talk will describe in detail his efforts to bring access to specialized care and services for a marginalized population that typically avoids medical care due to stigma and fear, maltreatment by medical providers, lack of insurance and being preoccupied with issues of day to day survival. His program, Health & Education Alternatives for Teens (“HEAT”), offers transgender youth living with or at high risk for HIV/AIDS age-appropriate and culturally competent care in its "one-stop" full service clinic, offering a full range of medical, mental health and supportive services that are tailored to meet their very specialized health care needs.
