Item Description
Painting in acrylic on canvas titled "Apsara" by artist Vijay Kulkarni. Painting is 18" x 24"
Vijay is a well known artist who paints exclusively on various themes from the well known Ajanta caves in India. Vijay has dedicated his life to depicting the world famous Ajanta frescoes, bringing them alive in their full color and splendor. The rock-cut Ajanta caves, a 'must-see' on any visit to India, contain paintings that are considered masterpieces of Buddhist and Hindu art.
Vijay is careful not to extrapolate his own imagination in areas where the original frescoes are damaged and missing. Instead he chooses to liven up what exists, transporting them from the dark recesses of the Ajanta caves to canvas, using the same color scheme as the original, and depicting the paintings in their original grandeur.
Vijay grew up in Aurangabad, 60 kms from these caves, and continues to live and work there.
