At its core, CrossFit is a fitness program designed to increase general physical preparedness (GPP). The program was originally designed in 2001 to give military personnel and first responders the broad and inclusive fitness essential to maintaining outstanding performance in potentially life threatening situations. To this end, CrossFit defines ten relevant elements of fitness: Endurance, Stamina, Strength, Flexibility, Power, Speed, Balance, Accuracy,Coordination, and Agility. For years people had defined fitness solely by one or perhaps two of these elements, but CrossFit defines true fitness as acquiring proficiency in all ten arenas. Think of the marathon runner incapable of doing a single unassisted pull-up, the powerlifter who is winded simply running around the block or the yoga enthusiast who struggles to move a couch. These people may be healthy and they are undoubtedly good at a single sport or activity, but are they actually fit? CrossFit is designed to address all of these elements in aggregate and prepare each person for any test or challenge that may arise.
Perhaps the most surprising fact about CrossFit is that none of the exercises or equipment we use is new or gimmicky. CrossFit simply reconfigures what is already empirically known to work by employing the salient elements of nearly every major training protocol, including gymnastics, calisthenics, powerlifting, Olympic weightlifting and endurance training. The emphasis is on constantly varied functional movement patterns, performed at high intensity.
For those of us who have submitted to this discipline, the results are undeniable. CrossFit, quite simply, will prepare you for the general challenges of life in a way that no other training program can and in the process help you to redefine what fitness means for yourself.
