Item Description

Each summer, the Center for Talent Development at Northwestern University's School of Education and Social Policy hosts its Opportunities for the Future conference, an enriching and informative afternoon event designed to guide academically talented students and their families in making wise educational decisions.

Parents hear from professors, psychologists, school administrators and businesspeople on diverse topics ranging from identifying children’s academic and social-emotional needs to saving for college. Students in PreK through grade 3 enjoy an afternoon of games and activities, while students in grades 4 through 12 attend workshops presenting fascinating applications of their favorite subjects and introducing them to various career ideas.

The 2014 Opportunities for the Future conference will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2014 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Northwestern University in Evanston.

The keynote speaker is Sally Cobb Krisel, EdD, from the University of Georgia. Registration is open to all interested families. Fee for participation is $95 for an individual and $135 per family.

Parenting for Achievement

Why do some gifted children tackle school eagerly and succeed academically while others are reluctant scholars, often disinterested and sometimes defiant? In this session Dr. Krisel will examine key traits of high-achieving gifted students and a number of parenting practices that promote an achievement orientation.

Sally Cobb Krisel, EdD is a nationally recognized leader in education for gifted children. She is the Director of Innovative and Advanced Programs for Hall County Schools in Gainesville, Georgia, where she is working to extend educational strategies for gifted children to a much larger group. She also serves as a part-time faculty member in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Georgia, and a nationally certified trainer in the National Association for Gifted Children’s “Parallel Curriculum Model.” Dr. Krisel earned her undergraduate degree in Elementary Education from Columbia College and her master’s and doctoral degrees in Gifted and Creative Studies from the University of Georgia.
