Item Description
For those returning to our annual online auction, you may recognize author William Kuhn. This year we offer his book Reading Jackie paired with The Cairo Trilogy, by Naguib Mahfouz. The Reading Jackie audiobook chronicles the life of Jackie Kennedy Onassis as an editor and supporter of rising authors. While an editor at Doubleday, she oversaw the English translation of The Cairo Trilogy, which tells the story of a city in decay and transition. As many supporters will know, UUSC has worked in Egypt supporting the transition to democracy.
Reading Jackie: Her Autobiography in Books, by William Kuhn (audiobook CD read by Susan Denaker)
Description from Amazon.com: “Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis never wrote a memoir, but she told her life story and revealed herself in intimate ways through the nearly 100 books she brought into print during the last two decades of her life as an editor at Viking and Doubleday. Based on archives and interviews with Jackie's authors, colleagues, and friends, Reading Jackie mines this significant period of her life to reveal both the serious and the mischievous woman underneath the glamorous public image.”
The Cairo Trilogy, by Naguib Mahfouz, edited by Jackie Kennedy Onassis (paperback)
Description from Amazon.com: “Naguib Mahfouz’s magnificent epic trilogy of colonial Egypt appears here in one volume for the first time. The Nobel Prize–winning writer’s masterwork is the engrossing story of a Muslim family in Cairo during Britain’s occupation of Egypt in the early decades of the twentieth century.”
