Item Description
Nestled off the eastern flank of Revolutionary Ridge in Concord and just one-half mile from Thoreau's birthplace, Gowing's Swamp/Thoreau's bog is one of the area's most ecologically and historically unique wetland landscapes. Thoreau frequented Gowing's Swamp and made a detailed study of its flora and physical characteristics, noting that it had an affinity more to Labrador than to Concord. His resulting mid-19th c. scientific record, along with his numerous philosophical reflections have brought the attention of natural history, scientific, and literary circles to the bog ever since.
Join Cherrie Corey for a 2.5 hour walking tour over the forested and glaciated landscape that surrounds this 8.9 acre level bog, that Thoreau called his sancta sanctorum and the Alcott sisters their "Paradise." You will also visit nearby Beck Stow's Swamp, where Thoreau often picked cranberries, and be introduced to the Nature Playscape at Ripley, a community venture that is evolving just east of the bog.
Cherrie - a Concord naturalist, educator, and photographer - has been studying and communing with Gowing's Swamp for more than 30 years and recently published a report documenting its history and ecology, through the Sudbury Valley Trustees . Up to 8 participants are welcome. Season, date, and time to be arranged.
