Alexander Valley Vineyards Merlot Alexander Valley 2006 Wetzel Family Estate:

Merlot has gotten a bad rap in recent years as a wimpy wine, but we're convinced we will change a lot of minds with our 2006 Estate Merlot. It's dense and rich, qualities a lot of folks associate with Cabernet Sauvignon. Winemaker Kevin Hall calls this a Merlot that think's it's a Cab. The 2006 growing season started out cool and wet and there was about a week of blistering temperatures in the summer. Yet more temperate conditions returned just in time for harvest, allowing the fruit to ripen evenly and develop some deep color. The long growing season delivered a beautiful Merlot showing aromas of black cherry, plum and pie spices like nutmeg and clove. In the glass, the wine opens up to reveal flavors of plum, vanilla, cherry and a touch of cranberry. 88 Points - Wine Enthusiast - December 2008

Aged Merlot Magnum from the AVV Wine Library!

90 points - California State Fair

Anyone who thinks Merlot is a lightweight has never tried this one. The 2007 is a well-structured wine with the kind of characteristics often ascribed to Cabernet.

Those characteristics are the result of the unique qualities of the five vineyards on the valley's southern end that provided the fruit for the 2007. The heavier soils in each of the vineyard sites allowed the fruit to ripen slowly and develop a wide range of flavors.

What you will find here is a lush Merlot with aromas of black cherry, plum, blackberry and cassis. In the glass are big flavors of plum, vanilla and dark cherry. On those occassions when you are about to reach for a Cab to serve with a particular dish, try this Merlot. You'll be surprised how good a partner it is.

“A lovely Merlot, soft and supple”

Alexander Valley Vineyards Merlot Alexander Valley 2008 Wetzel Family Estate:

If you love great Merlots, look no further.

This 2008 is a classic Alexander Valley Merlot, a wine with great structure and a lengthy finish. On the nose, blueberries and blackberries dominate. While certainly a weighty Merlot, there's also good balance with black cherry, blackberry and plum in abundance, surrounded by a touch of mint and sweet oak.
