About Charlotte Cain:

I have been inspired by South Asian ritual images ever since I encountered the landmark publication Ajit Mookerjee’s Tantra Art when it first appeared.  This book on South Asian art linked occult abstract painting with astrological diagrams, cosmic maps, and a range of ritual images. The small geometric paintings I made in response in the 1960’s evolved into large patterned, knitted hangings that echoed the colors and designs of Tantric painting with energized fields of dots and dashes. Agnes Martin, who visited my studio in the mid 1970’s, encouraged me to continue with symmetrical compositions and all-over field images. After receiving a National Endowment Artists’ Fellowship in 1980-81, I began painting arrays of small images in a grid format on printed patterned fabrics.  Accompanying my husband during his 1995-6 Fulbright Fellowship to study traditional sculpture, I had the good fortune to spend time with preeminent Pahari miniature painter Vijay Sharma, and Jaipur miniature master, Bannu Sharma.  Their example and the techniques they taught inspired me to create all-over-field images painted with gouache on antique Indian paper.  However, I soon became interested in single images that resonated more closely with the visual meditations of Tantric art and began painting talismanic symbols including nagas mudras (symbolic or meditative hand gestures), and most recently kolams, ritual images that women all over India draw daily on their thresholds for protection and good luck.  At the same time, I began an ongoing series of grid paintings called One Step at at Time.
