Artist Information
"I have had a passion for photography since I was a teenager and have learned about different mediums and techniques as technology has evolved. I received a BA in Liberal Studies from the University of Southern Maine, with a minor in Art and concentration in Photography. My studies were supplemented by classes at the Maine College of Art. I received a Masters degree in Public Administration from New York University.
I had the incredible opportunity to apprentice with Berenice Abbott, one of the Masters of American 20th Century Photography. That experience was life changing and gave me exposure to a global view of the art world, as well as extensive fine art darkroom experience and field experience with various types of cameras.
I also had the opportunity to receive a grant and be the photographer for an Oral History Project of the Jewish History in Portland Maine. These photographs were on display in the late 1970’s and again in late 2011 at the Tree of Life Museum in Portland, Maine.
In 2004, I was diagnosed with Ovarian and Uterine cancer, a poignant and life changing experience. With cancer survivorship as a now and powerful platform my photography has brought me to a deeper level of sight.
I work at Unum Corporation in Portland, live in Portland with my partner Maureen and have a 26 year old son who lives and works in Boston.
I am on the Board of the Cancer Community Center and the Ronald McDonald House and carry a deep commitment for the support of those dealing with cancer. I am also an avid skier, swimmer and cyclist."
This item was donated in memory of Cheryl's brother, Robbie.
