Item Description

Set of 3 Antique American Tobacco Cards

In the 1880's cigarette manufacturers such as Allan and Ginter and Duke began to sell their smokes in packages of ten in a two piece 'slide and shell box' for 5 cents a box. This packaging required a "stiffener" to be placed between two rows of cigarettes. A piece of plain cardboard was first used, then manufacturers realized they could print pictures on the cardboard "inserts". One of the most popular series was produced in 1888 by Duke's Cigarettes and entitled "Fishers and Fish". The 50 cards depict many fresh water and salt water species including the "Speckled Trout" and the "California Salmon" These cards are very rare, particularly those in good condition, and are highly sought by collectors.

By the end ofthe 19th Century, Buck Duke had managed to buy up most of the other cigarette manufacturers and create The American Tobacco Company which decreased competition and the need for marketing. As a result few tobacco cards were produced in the United States.
