For Grades K-5, A Shoulders of Giants event, sponsored by IEEE Dallas GOLD, Science Discovery Mini-Camp on Saturday, May 17th, 2014, 9:00am-12:00pm in the RMH Gym.
Theme: Actions and Reactions
Students learn how to spot the signs of a chemical reaction through a number of hands on activities and exciting live demonstrations, a great way to acclimate students to careful observation and note taking. Throughout the activities, advanced concepts such as molecular bonding, the periodic table, and reaction catalysts are also introduced to students. As a final project, students are introduced to an important real world application of what they’ve learned as they are invited to use their creativity in an electroplating project they can take home.
“On The Shoulders of Giants," is a non-profit association dedicated to bringing hands-on science educational opportunities to children of all ages. Too often, students become discouraged with math and science at an early age, succumbing to common societal notions that people are either born with or without “math skills,” or that only a select few are capable of pursuing a career as a scientist. The Shoulders of Giants curriculum consists of a collection of interactive demonstrations, hands-on guided learning activities, and team-based competitions. The goal of this mini-camp is to encourage, excite, and inspire many talented young minds and ignite in them an interest in math, science, and engineering disciplines for years to come.
