Item Description

Carolee Campbell's book Emerson & Thoreau / Spirit & Matter, published in 2003, in an edition of 100, and priced at $200.

Signed by Beth Witherell and Carolee Campbell.

Emerson & Thoreau / Spirit & Matter,
Ralph Waldo Emerson & Henry David Thoreau 2003

This book was brought forth to honor the 200th anniversary of the birth of Ralph Waldo Emerson on May 25, 1803 as well as to compare beliefs about the tangible and the intangible held by these two towering nineteenth-century figures. In this book two seminal essays have been excerpted: Emerson’s Nature, first published in 1836 and Thoreau’s Ktaadn published in 1848. The essays are followed by a commentary by Elizabeth Hall Witherell, Editor-in-Chief of The Writings of Henry D. Thoreau. In her closely considered essay she illuminates the similarities and differences in their ways of thinking.

The text is printed in two colors in Garamont with Erbar Initialien for the display. The delicate green text paper is dampened vintage Charter Oak from the Barcham Green Hayle Mill in England. As the mill closed in 1987, this paper is no longer available. The handmade cover paper is a cream-colored flax sheet produced at the Center for the Book Papermaking Facility at the University of Iowa. The binding is in the limp paper style with exposed sewing on the spine.

The edition is limited to 100 numbered copies. 10.25 inches by 6.5 inches. 20 pages.
