Item Description
Lead by artist/mom, Alix Bailey, the kids in Katie's class used colorful Sharpies on heavyweight Bristol paper to create their creatures and characters for this "Exquisite Corpse" book.
Alix was inspired by a game her children often play with their grandparents in which each person draws a head and shoulders on the top third of a piece of paper, folds it under to hide their creation and then passes it to another person to draw the torso in the middle third of the paper and, again, folds and hides that part and passes it to a third person to draw the lower body on the remaining portion of the paper. When completed and unfolded they are rewarded with pictures of unique and funny "exquisite corpses".
The Exquisite Corpse game began as a word game invented by Surrealists during the Dada movement of the 1920's, and the name was derived by the first phrase that was created when they first played the game -- "Le cadavre exquis boira le vin nouveau." ("The exquisite corpse will drink the new wine.")
