Item Description

This is a painting on cloth canvas framed on a 22 x 18.5 wood frame is of the Legend of of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl.

Item Special Note

Popocatepetl, whose name means “smoking mountain” in the Nahuatl (Aztec) language, was an Aztec warrior who was in love with Iztaccihuatl “meaning white woman”. The myth about these two volcanoes lying between Mexico City and Puebla is similar to that of Romeo and Juliet. While Popocatepetl was away fighting a battle, the Aztec princess, Iztaccihuatl, was mistakenly informed that Popocatepetl had been killed.  Crushed by such tragedy and overwhelmed by sadness, the pricess died without even imagining that it could be lie.  When Popocatepetl returned and found her dead, he was overcome with grief. He carried her to the mountains, built a mount and laid her body on it. He vowed that he would never leave her again. Those who have visited Mexico and seen these two volcanoes will notice in Iztaccihuatl the shape of a woman, lying on her back and covered with a white sheet of snow. At her feet stands Popocatepetl, eternally watching over her. The legend goes on to say that when the warrior remembers his beloved, hi heart-that preserves the fire of eternal passion-shakes and his torch smokes. That’s why, even today, the Popocatpetl volcano continues spewing fumaroles.
