Item Description
Joe Campbell is well known throughout Canada and the United States for his skill as a traditional carver of the Northwest Coast.
Born on the Musqueam Reserve in October of 1948, Joe Campbell began to carve when he was seventeen years old. Influenced by other carvers in his family and his surroundings, Joe Campbell developed his own style, which he has applied to making wall plaques, masks, totem poles and bowls.
He is a member of the Coast Salish Tribe and also signs his pieces as Katxalacha, which is his native name. This piece of art is signed 'Joe Campbell'
This hand carved whale, which stands 7" tall by 6" wide was created and signed by Joe Campbell in 1979. The detail in the carving is fantastic and being 35 years old, the condition is perfect. A great piece for any collector of whale and or Native American artwork.
Lolita was in captivity for 9 years when this piece was carved, and I wonder if Mr. Campbell had her in his thoughts as he was making this piece of Native art.
