Item Description

Abdul Shokoor Khesrawi was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, and graduated from the University of Kabul School of Arts.  He works with a variety of media - oil, watercolor, pencil, pen, chalk, pastels and use of the pallet knife on oils.  His paintings include landscapes, nature and reflections of Afghan history as well as abstracts.  Plagued with severe and painful medical problems all his life, he found refuge in art, although during the long and agonizing wars in Afghanistan he could neither find nor afford proper art supplies and often painted on scraps of paper, boards, curtains, whatever he could find.

As the war was intensifying in 1993, Shookoor was able to escape to Pakistan, but soon found he was facing different challenges there.  He was able to return to Kabul in 2002, but found a completely destroyed country.  Eventually he made his way to the United States.

Shokoor has had several solo exhibitions in Kabul and has exhibited in Pakistan, as well as in a number of locations in the Bay Area, and he and his brother Jelani have opened the Little Gallery in Pleasanton.  He believes that through art we still would be able to bring people together, to understand each other better, to help one another, to live our lives in peace and to treat one another with respect, justice and kindness.

For his violin, Shokoor used oil paint and a palette knife.
