Item Description
Jan Schafir has been painting most of her adult life. Trained and practicing as a professional registered nurse, she began her art career by taking lessons locally with the City of Fremont Recreation Department in drawing, color mixing and then watercolor painting. The spontaneity of watercolor attracted her, as one who welcomes the unplanned challenges in life, sometimes happy, sometimes sad, but never dull. In 1970, she attended lessons at the Asilomar conference center conducted by the late Jade Fon, who hired many master watercolor teachers as part of his staff, and continued taking classes from Jade until his death in 1984.
In 1990, Schafir began teaching children in the Arts in the Schools Program sponsored by the Fremont Cultural Arts Council. She taught many years in Yosemite National Park, at the La Romita School of Art in Italy, in the Dordogne region of France, and for the past four years aboard the Cunard Lines' Queen ships.
Schafir is a signature member of the Society of Western Artists, twice past president of the Fremont Art Association and found of Fremont's "Open Studios" that take place every year in early June. Her paintings have been published in books and magazines and can be seen at the Fremont Art Association Gallery or at Jan's Art Studios in Fremont.
