Dirt Coffee Bar is a local gem that works to empower people with autism. Run largely by young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders, Dirt provides jobs to a subset of the population for whom finding work can be a challenge. Dirt Coffee Bar is a venture started by Garden Autism Services of Colorado. Garden provides services to children, adolescents, and adults, focusing on promoting independence across all domains of an individual's life.

Dirt's mission is to "empower the Autism community by raising awareness, cultivating jobs and creating sustainable prosperity through creative collaboration." Garden's young adult program provides clients with pre-vocational training, supports them through the job search, and then assists with on-the-job training. A self-run coffee shop provides immense opportunity for job readiness
training, as well as the chance for those who enjoy the work to continue in a long-term job placement.

Opening on World Autism Day, April 2, 2014, they are seeking just the right location in Denver to park their coffee cart. Over the next few months, therapists will work together with Garden's young adult clients to construct the coffee bar, choose a local coffee
roaster, and learn the ins and outs of serving exceptional coffee. A latte served up with the opportunity to support a great cause? Maybe it's time to put a little Dirt in your coffee cup.
