Item Description

A one-hour lesson with NJSO Principal Tuba Derek Fenstermacher. The lesson will take place at a mutually agreeable location in Northern NJ. 

A native of Huntsville, Alabama, DEREK FENSTERMACHER became Principal Tubist of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra in 2011. In addition to his work with the NJSO, he has been Principal Tubist with the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera Orchestra since 2006. Fenstermacher has also performed and recorded with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, New World Symphony, Houston Ballet Orchestra, Alabama Symphony, Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, Huntsville Symphony, Dayton Philharmonic, West Virginia Symphony, Mobile Symphony, Tuscaloosa Symphony and Meridian Symphony Orchestra; he was an associate member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago from 2008–09.

Fenstermacher began playing the tuba at age of 14, and by age 19 was a featured soloist with the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra. He received a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Alabama, where he studied with Demondrae Thurman and James Michael Dunn. He received a Master of Music degree from the Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Timothy Northcut; he is currently pursuing a Performer’s Certificate from the University of Houston with Mark Barton.

Fenstermacher lives with his wife, flutist Allison Kelsey, and their two cats. In his free time, he enjoys cooking and talking about southern BBQ.
