Acrylic on canvas, framed in mahogany wood with a lite cherry stain.
This work is #15 from a series of 42 paintings exploring the various styles of modern art from 1880 -1972. Examples of the movements considered are from Post-Impressionism thru Minimalism. “Earthshine” takes cue from the golden era of the Vienna Secession 1898-1918. This chapter in modern art is represented in classical form by the artists Gustav Klimt and Ego Scheele.
The subject of the painting is early spring. A blooming crab apple tree centrally located against a background in earthy hue revealed by winter melt. The character of the crab apple is define by convention. Branch and blossom subject to the laws of gravity defined by a single source of light. Ariel ellipsoids float without constraint, illuminated from with. Crescent highlights on the moons bearing witness from seedling to maturity.
