Item Description
A print of an original woodcut created by internationally recognized artist, Bruce Carter, for the series, The Warsaw Woodcuts.
Bruce Carter was born in Massachusetts and grew up in Palmyra, NY. He graducated from Albright Art School, SUNY Buffalo and Penn State. He has been professor of printmaking and drawing at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh since 1963. Carter's work is housed in a number of collections: among them are the National Archives (Washington, D.C.), the Museum of Xylography (Capri, Itlay), the National Historical and Ethnographical Museum and the Kunst Foreningen Museum (Oslo, Norway), the Ghetto Fighters Museum (Israel) and the Muzeum Panstwowe (Poland).
The Warsaw Woodcuts represent the culmination of over twenty years of struggling by Bruce Carter to comprehend the horrors of the Holocaust and specifically the hell of the Warsaw Ghetto and the prison camps. His chosen medium - that of woodcut prints - depects these horrors with a bold starkness.
