Item Description

Who knew a place like this existed in the Los Angeles Metropolitan area? It’s an amazing center for all those who are interested at all in the most acrobatic, arboreal, agile apes on the planet!

The Gibbon Conservation Center specializes in the observation and conservation of gibbon apes. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a place where the staff genuinely care so much for the animals and their cause as they do here.

The Gibbon houses the rarest group of apes in the Western Hemisphere, is the only institution in the world to house and breed all four genera of gibbon, and has successfully reproduced 7 gibbon species.

This will be a guided tour and it may be scheduled either during the week or on the weekend. Hours are flexible but gibbons are early rises so it's best to schedule your tour before 2:00pm. 10:00am or 11:00am are the hours when gibbons are more likely to sing and are very active, so this is the ideal time to take your tour.

Bring your own food and eat in the picnic area or stop and eat nearby – Grab a big breakfast at Telly’s down the road or try Lima Limon Peruvian Restaurant, that serves tasty and unique dishes about 10 minutes away.

 Gibbon basics:

  • These endangered, small, arboreal apes are considered to be among the world’s greatest acrobats. They can leap distances of 40 feet at speeds of up to 35 mph while 200 feet above the ground!
  • The Hainan gibbon is the rarest mammal in the world.
  • Gibbons are one of the few serial monogamous primates.
  • Often referred to as the “songbirds” of the primate family and the most musical land mammal, gibbons can project their voices up to 2 miles through the dense rain forest canopy.
  • Their natural habitat – the dwindling rain forests of Southeast, South and East Asia  - is being destroyed at the alarming rate of 32 acres per minute!
