Item Description
Get an insider’s view of our neighbor across the border, led by Silver Gate dad and journalist Elliot Spagat. Elliot heads the San Diego bureau of The Associated Press, where he has covered the U.S.-Mexico border for the last 11 years. He previously lived in and reported from Mexico and Central America. This is a unique opportunity to feast on delicious food and get to know the fascinating world of Tijuana. No Spanish required. We’ll design a schedule around three or four restaurants, suited to your tastes, and also invite one or two journalists, artists or celebrity chefs to join us for part of our stay. Here’s a possible itinerary:-Start downtown at “La Corriente Cevicheria Nais” with seafood dishes including red snapper and ahi tuna tostadas, then walk it off on Avenida Revolucion, the main tourist drag, and Calle Sexta, the scene of a burgeoning nightlife.-Drive to Friendship Park / Plaza de Amistad for breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and downtown San Diego skyline. Chat (in English) with Vicente Calderon, one of Tijuana’s most respected journalists and founder of the online publication, tijuanapress.com.-Drive to Tacos “La Ermita” in La Mesa neighborhood for what many locals consider Tijuana’s best tacos. Take your steak, shrimp or salmon tacos to the huge bar of chile- and fruit-based salsas.-Stop at Mariscos Mazateno to sample the best seafood traditions from Sinaloa state, the birthplace of many Tijuana residents and much of its famous food. Always packed with locals ordering signature shrimp tacos.-If anyone is overdosed on seafood, stop at “Tacos El Tronco” for beef tacos on pita-style bread, then finish at Tijuana’s Cultural Center for the latest art exhibit.Duration of tour is about four hours, not including travel time to and from the border. Price includes all food and transportation. Must have valid passport or SENTRI pass for travel to and from Mexico. Transportation will be provided in Spagat family cars to and from Silver Gate. Those without SENTRI passes will exit the car at border crossing to go return to the U.S. in pedestrian lanes, then be picked up on U.S. side. Please note that without SENTRI, border wait times can be unpredictable.THE BIDDING FOR THIS ITEM WILL START ONLINE AND WILL THEN BE MOVED TO OUR SILENT AUCTION AT THE LIVE EVENT ON SATURDAY, MAY 3.
