Item Description

This auction item is ideal for that family member/friend/medical student that has an interest in pursuing a career in medicine and/or surgery, or an adult that has interest in learning more about what is involved behind the scenes of a surgeon's daily life. The holder of the winning bid will be given an extraordinary and unique one-on-one experience by spending 4 hours, (at least 1 hour each), with four board certified surgeons from our community.

The experience will allow an individual to interview and learn more about what is entailed in Plastic Surgery, General Surgery, Neurosurgery and Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery.

Where possible (and if age appropriate), this may include a tour of a hospital from trauma centers to surgery rooms.

The following surgeons will be available for the interview:

Dr. Joseph F. Capella (Chief of Post-Bariatric surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center) 

Dr. Capella graduated from Phillips Academy Andover and received a BA degree from Cornell University and an M.D. from the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center. He completed a general surgery residency at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center, a University Hospital of the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, and trained in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Dr. Capella is a nationally and internationally recognized leading expert in body contouring surgery. He lectures and provides instructional courses on a regular basis at the symposia of some of the most prestigious plastic surgery organizations in the world: The American Society of Plastic Surgeons, The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and The Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery. He has co-authored several of the most important textbooks on plastic surgery: The Art of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery: Principles and Techniques, 2nd edition, Plastic Surgery, 3rd edition and Body Contouring and Liposuction. He has written many peer-reviewed articles and has been featured in the media numerous times including ABC's 20/20, The View, Elle Magazine and CNBC and has been included in the Top 10 List of plastic surgeons in New York for a number of years.

Dr. Douglas R. Ewing (Director of the Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship Program, and Chief of the Division of Laparoscopic Surgery Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC).)

Dr. Ewing obtained his undergraduate degree at Harvard, and an M.D. from Columbia University College Of Physicians And Surgeons. He completed his residency at St Lukes-Roosevelt Hospital Center, and did his fellowship at Hackensack University Medical Center.

Dr. Ewing specializes in laparoscopic surgery. He is the Director of Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship program, as well as Chief of the Division of Laparoscopic Surgery at HUMC in New Jersey.  In addition, Dr. Ewing has published numerous papers and posters about topics in laparoscopic surgery, including bariatric surgery. He has presented and spoken about his work at several national surgical meetings, and has given video presentations to other surgeons in Europe and the US. Dr. Ewing is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, American Medical Association, Minimally Invasive Robotic Association, American Society of Bariatric Surgeons, Medical Society State of New York, American Society of General Surgeons, and the Medical Society State of New Jersey. Dr. Ewing has earned several academic awards, as well as awards for surgical excellence. He was awarded both the St. Luke’s Roosevelt Department of Surgery Award for Excellence in Laparoscopic Surgery and the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons Resident Achievement Awards. He was also honored with inclusion in the “Best Physicians as Chosen by Nurses” for New Jersey monthly magazine in February 2010.

Dr. G. Alexander Jones (Medical Director of Spine care and Neuro-oncology, and Vice -Chair for the Department of Surgery at Orange Regional Medical Center)

Dr. Jones earned a B.A. in Chemistry from The Ohio State University, summa cum laude, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He earned his MD from Ohio State, and completed his neurosurgical training at Cleveland Clinic. He completed a two-year combined orthopedic and neurosurgical fellowship in complex spinal surgery.

Dr. Jones is a partner with Hudson Valley Brain & Spine Surgery, a private practice serving Orange and Rockland Counties. He is Vice-Chair of the Department of Surgery at Orange Regional Medical Center, and also serves as Medical Director of Spine care and Neuro-oncology. His practice is focused on complex and reconstructive spine surgery, as well as spine and brain tumor surgery. He is board-certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery, and is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. Dr. Jones has authored over two dozen journal articles, book chapters, and presentations, and regularly serves on the teaching faculty for spine review courses. He was featured on the cover of the May 2009 edition of MD News magazine, and was elected 2013 Outstanding Surgical Consultant by the hospital physicians at Orange Regional Medical Center. 

Dr. Ernest L. Sink (Co-director of the Center for Hip Preservation at the Hospital for Special Surgery)

Dr. Sink obtained his undergraduate degree at the University of Colorado in Boulder, CO. Dr. Sink graduated from Texas Southwestern Medical School, where he went on to complete his orthopedic residency training. He completed his fellowship training at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego and pursued post-fellowship study of innovative hip procedures in both the United States and Europe, including Bern, Switzerland with Professor Reinhold Ganz, who pioneered these techniques. Dr. Sink is involved in teaching other surgeons on a national level and collaborates with several other specialized hip surgeons in the country. Dr Sink is board certified with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Dr. Sink performs hip procedures in infants, adolescents and young adults, including periacetabular osteotomies (PAO) and surgical hip dislocations. Dr. Sink has authored over 17 peer reviewed articles and six book chapters, and has particular academic and research interest in the areas of pediatric hip disorders and trauma. Dr. Sink is the Co-Director of Hospital for Special Surgery’s Center for Hip Preservation, and a Professor of medicine at Cornell Medical School. He is affiliated with American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery of North America, Western Orthopaedic Association, and Colorado Orthopaedic Association.
