White Lake Guitar Fest 2014 May 30-31 A wonderful weekend in the White Lake area awaits guitarists of all skill levels. Packed full with performances, workshops, give aways, and vendors, the third annual White Lake Guitar Fest, May 30-31 in Montague, promises to provide something for everyone! Different styles of playing and picking are welcomed and there is even a beginner's track of workshops for those who have always wanted to learn guitar! Cost is $30 in advance ($40 at the door) and includes all performances, workshops and events. Student registration is only $25. Kicking off the weekend at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 30 will be a performance by the Grand Rapids Guitar Quartet at the Howmet Playhouse, 304 S. Mears, Whitehall. Ticket cost is $15 for the public but is included in Guitar Fest registration. The Grand Rapids Guitar Quartet is comprised of four award winning guitarists who currently make their homes in the West Michigan area, Andrew Bergeron, David Martin, Brian Morris and Michael Stockdale. For the past five years they have received an overwhelmingly positive response from audiences at their sold out performances at colleges, universities, art centers, chamber music series and community concert series. They present a program of a variety of transcriptions of masterworks, Latin music and original compositions, along with entertaining, informative and often humorous explanations. Registration on Saturday, May 31 starts at 9 a.m at the Book Nook and Java Shop, 8744 Ferry St. Hourly workshops run from 10 ¿ 5 p.m., presented by Brian Morris, Eric O. Smith, Wayne Walden, and Curt Isakson covering topics including finger picking strategies and exercises, improvisation, bar chords, playing up the neck, open tunings, classical guitar, song writing for guitar, using technology and the internet to improve guitar skills, jazz technique, easy leads for rock, the basic blues, and much more. An open mic is schedule on Saturday, May 31, 7 p.m., at the Book Nook & Java Shop to culminate a great weekend of guitar learning and playing!
