Item Description

Ken Balcomb is offering this item for up to 3 guests and a one night stay in the guest rooms at the main house of The Center for Whale Research on San Juan Island, overlooking Haro Strait.

Travel to spectacular San Juan Island, WA or Vancouver Island, BC -- winner's choice -- and take part in active, federally permitted photo-identification research of the Southern Resident Community of killer whales.

Help Ken and The Center collect critical population data on this endangered population, and see how this data is analyzed and employed by scientists to help the whales. See these whales through the eyes of the people working to protect them.

Ken is a pioneer in photo-identification of cetaceans and is the founder of Orca Survey (1976), a study of Pacific Northwest Southern Resident Killer Whales (Orcas).

He founded the non-profit Center for Whale Research in 1985 and is its volunteer Executive Director, and employed Senior Scientist.

Ken is a Charter Member of the Society for Marine Mammalogy. During the summer months and early fall, anyone coming to the San Juan Islands and The Center for Whale Research for two or three days has an extremely good chance at seeing whales -- resident or transient orcas, humpbacks, minke whales, Dall's porpoises and Pacific white-sided dolphins!
