Item Description

Walk into the Newport home of Doris Duke—heiress, philanthropist and art collector. Enjoy her magnificent oceanfront estate, still decorated as she left it, where you will see French furniture, European art, Chinese porcelains, and Turkish carpets collected from exotic locations around the world. Located on Newport’s exclusive Bellevue Avenue, Rough Point provides a sweeping ocean view and expansive grounds designed by renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted.

Doris Duke was an individual whose sense of style represented her personality and creativity. She was a confident woman who enjoyed fashion and tried new trends, but made her own rules of style. She dressed in outfits that fit with her diverse interests and lifestyle and did not always fit the standard rules of dressing. Overall, Miss Duke was a lover of quality clothing and enjoyed the pleasures of fashion that made her stand out as the confident and beautiful woman she was. The 2014 exhibit No Rules: The Personal Style of Doris Duke examines a portion of Doris Duke's clothing collection ranging from lavish evening gowns with exquisite embroidery to the simple silhouette of a little black dress.

Tour this Newport estate as a welcome guest, and experience life as a 20th-century heiress. All tours are led by a knowledgeable guide. Small, intimate groups of 12–14 guests allow for a relaxed and personal experience. Lasting approximately 75 minutes, the tour visits the entire first floor of the house, then continues upstairs with a visit to Doris Duke's bedroom and to the special exhibition galleries.
