Item Description

"This is one of the first pieces of folk art I ever purchased after being introduced to "folk art" by Louis and Aggie Jones.  While on a spring southern fieldtrip with several other CGP "folkie" students and Professor Rod Roberts, we stopped at the mountain cabin of Marshall Fleming in West Virginia [following a lead, I'm sure, from Roddy Moore of the Class of '71]."  - Varik Chittenden (donor)

It is signed like this:

"Carved and built by Marshall B. Fleming, Antioch Route, Box 153, New Creek, West Virginia, 26743"

Fleming was a wood-carver of some fame, having had several pieces of his work on display at the Smithsonian Institution at Washington, D.C. and had several articles published. Fleming [1916-1998] did other models and dioramas, his best known being his interpretation of the John F. Kennedy's caisson in his funeral procession.  One of these is now in the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Measures 30.5" long, 8.5 " wide, and 11.5" high plus base
