Item Description
A personal tour of a 21st century family farming operation in Southwest Kansas, starting with a private plane ride to your destination, the airport in Johnson, Kansas. Trip includes 1-2 night stay (winning bidder's choice.)
Headquartered in Johnson, Kansas, the Winger farming operation is ideally located in the Great Plains for growing wheat, corn, and milo. This 20,000-acre farming enterprise has grown to its current size since 1948 under the entrepreneurial leadership of Melvin Winger. Winger is well known in Southwest Kansas for his business philosophy: diversify your business; in creating new businesses, find partners with whom you enjoy working; treat people like you’d like to be treated, and strive to make the best better.
After a plane ride from Denver, Mona and Melvin Winger will host the visitors in their home, providing an extensive tour to see how food is grown and cared for in the wide open plains of America’s wheat basket.
From Denver, the plane will leave from the Centennial airport. Their private plane, a Cessna 210, will take the visitors to Johnson, Kansas in 1.5 hours. The date of the trip will be scheduled at a time that is convenient for wining bidder and donors.
Item Special Note
Melvin Winger has won numerous awards for his farming and community service leadership across the region. In fact, due to his reputation, this farm was one of two national pilot sites to test the radio-controlled monitoring system that is now an integral part of large pivot irrigation farming operations.
Winger will provide a detailed historical perspective of how farming has changed from the early days of the 20th century to today.
Melvin and Mona plan an evening filled with a trip to Johnson (population 1,200), good food, amazing piano and organ music, and great conversation.
