Item Description
Scholars have long been intrigued by the Buddha's defining action (karma) as intention. The Forerunner of All Things explores systematically how intention and agency were interpreted in all genres of early Theravada thought. It offers a philosophical exploration of intention and motivation as they are investigated in Buddhist moral psychology. At stake is how we understand karma, the nature of moral experience, and the possibilities for freedom.
Author Maria Heim is Associate Professor of Buddhist Studies at Amherst College. Her work focuses on moral psychology, emotions, and agency in South Asian intellectual history.
With origins dating back to 1478, Oxford University Press (OUP) is the world's largest university press with the widest global presence.
See Buddhadharma's "Book Brief" on The Forerunner of All Things.
