Item Description

Introduction to Zen weekends at Dai Bosatsu are a unique opportunity to experience an in-depth introduction to Rinzai Zen Buddhist practice in a monastic environment.

The program begins on Friday in the late afternoon with a detailed orientation. It then focuses intensively throughout the weekend on central elements of Zen practice--zazen (seated meditation with attention to posture and breath), chanting, jihatsu practice (traditional silent, formal meals), and work practice. The abbot, Shinge Roshi, will give a Dharma talk and will meet with participants for a question-and-answer period. The weekend concludes with informal lunch and discussion on Sunday afternoon.

Accommodations are clean and simple. Each room has a futon bed, table, lamp and closet. Bedding and towels are provided. There is a shared bathroom and shower room down the hall. Most rooms are singles; some are shared by 2 - 4 people.

On America's Bicentennial, July 4, 1976, International Dai Bosatsu Zendo Kongo-ji, a Rinzai Zen Buddhist monastery, opened its doors. Located on 1,400 acres high in the Catskill Mountains Forest Preserve, DBZ continues to offer an ideal setting for authentic Zen practice to lay and ordained Zen students of all religious and cultural backgrounds.
