Vik Muniz, a New York CIty based visual artist was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil. His career as an artist began as a sculptor in the late 1980s. He specializes in remaking famous artworks. Over the past decade he has created  a number of series based on the art of past masters including Rubens, Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Monet, Redon, Matisse, and of course, Piranesi. He reconstructs their works by using radically different media such as chocolate, dust gathered from the Whitney’s offices and galleries, cuttings of reproductions of paintings by Van Gogh and Monet taken from magazines and, more recently, by recreating Delacroix and Cranach’s paintings with industrial rubbish. After making ‘models’ based on their works, he photographs the sculpture which then becomes the final form. His method of working has been described as a hybrid of drawing and photography. Muniz states "the interactive nature of these works is meant to inspire thoughts about vision, recognition and perception in general rather than simply be something to be seen." Muniz's works are part of the collections of the MOMA, the Art Institute of Chicago, IL, Daros Latin America, Zurich, Switzerland, Foundation Cartier pour l'Art Contemporain, Paris, the Guggenheim Museum of Art, New York, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and amongst many others.

In 2010, Lucy Walker directed the documentary Waste Land, feature Vik Muniz's work on one of the world's largest garbage dumps, Jardim Gramacho, on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. The documentary was nominated to the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 83rd Academy Awards.
