Item Description

The integrity of this chair has been preserved with care.  The patina of the chair pairs perfectly  with the amazing encaustic artwork provided by this professional artist (for which he is celebrated throughout the region).  The artwork is provided to hang before the chair where the buyer can comfortably sit and enjoy the fine work of his hand both on the chair and wood panel.  A true collector's find!

ARTIST STATEMENT/INFLUENCE:

During my initial musings about how to create an art piece using this chair, I quickly became reluctant to add painted images because I collect antiques and cherish the beautiful patina on vintage wood furniture.  So I began to consider how I could create an image representing the chair, but without changing the chair. I decided to photograph elements of the chair (the wood slats, the metal plates and screws, and the overall beauty of the wood grain).

After photographing the chair I began to intergrate the chair photos in a figurative collage piece. I started with a digital collage of the chair photos integrated with a figure. I then collaged the digital pieces at to a wood panel with an encaustic wax process. I added more collage paper images and finished the work with an encaustic wax over-glaze and encaustic paint.

My final step was to clean the chair with a wood polish and name the work. As I was creating the piece my thoughts were about the memories the chair held. I wondered where the chairs originated and how they were used over the years and if they had been part of a seating system for a library, auditorium or church. I thought of the people who sat in the chair possibly listening to lectures, poetry readings, music and more. I imagined both the chair and people sitting on it would be collecting years of memories. Thus, I named the work "Holding Memories"
