Item Description
Peter Smith's essay, "Hand in Hand", has been a favorite of the Revels North community. Mr. Smith describes his transformation: how, after years of remaining firmly in his seat during "Lord of the Dance", he finally accepted the extended hand of a stranger to join the cast and audience - and to dance, dance!
"For me, the moment of taking to the aisles has become something very close to communion: I stay put (without, I hope, being ungracious to anyone who may thrust their hand in my direction) until I spot someone in the chain whom I know or admire or love, but do not see every day, and then I invite myself, as it were, into his or her hand. And once I'm on my feet I try to choose with care the people whom I reach out to- someone I wish I knew better, someone I know is at low ebb, someone who seems to be on the brink of taking the plunge but can't quite do it. There are lots of reasons for extending one's hand to a particular other hand."
Peter Smith spent all his working life in college administration in the US and Canada - his longest tenure anywhere was 17 years at Dartmouth, 13 of them as Director of the Hopkins Center. Since retirement he has lived in Buffalo NY.
The autographed essay will be framed by The Gilded Edge Custom Framing and Art Gallery in Hanover.
