About the Mask: Joseph Steven Sakic was born July 7, 1969.  He is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player and current hockey executive. He played his entire 21-year National Hockey League career with the Quebec Nordiques/Colorado Avalanche franchise.  He retired from the NHL on July 9, 2009, and had his jersey number retired prior to the Avalanche's 2009–10 season opener on October 1, 2009, at Pepsi Center. On November 12, 2012, Sakic was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame and on April 11, 2013, Sakic  was inducted into the Canada Sports Hall of Fame. He served as executive advisor and alternate governor for the Avalanche, effective at the end of the 2010–11 season, and was promoted to Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations on May 10, 2013.

About the Artist: Karen Pollart, a native Coloradan, retired from a career as an art educator and is continuing as a professional artist.  She resides in Centennial, CO.

"It is fun to watch ice hockey and watching Joe Sakic through his career with his talent persevere beyond injuries and obstacles inspires others to do likewise. In painting the mask of Joe Sakic, a cartoon version did not seem appropriate.  In this style, determination is attempted to be shown in his face.  Also, the importance of hospice care becomes more pertinent to all of us as time goes by.  Thank you for supporting The Denver Hospice."
