“In 1998 Medecins san Frontier (MSF) formally recognized the need to implement mental health and psychosocial intervention as part of their emergency work.
Depression and anxiety can immobilize people at just the time when they need to take action for themselves and their families.
Because of this I decided to make a mosaic attributed to Vincent Van Gogh, “Sunflowers”. Van Gogh suffered years of painful anxiety and frequent bouts of mental illness. He died at the age of 37 from what most believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Van Gogh painted 4 different sunflower paintings in less than 1 week in 1888. He later made 3 repetitions from the original 4 paintings.
I made this mosaic from broken dishes. Vincent Van Gogh was broken mentally.
His pain was apparent in his style of painting and in the many letters he wrote, mostly to his brother Theo. According to Theo, his brothers last words were, “The sadness will last forever.”
Tragically Van Gogh died not knowing the acclaim his art would receive. Today his legacy is immortal, even though he sold only one painting in his life.”
