Deirdre D. Ruff (Dee Ruff) worked for 17+ years as a Master of Clinical Social Work, offering support and counseling to women, children and families in hospice care, maternal/child health settings, Neonatal ICU, and private adoption services. Her second career path led her into the field of Therapeutic Massage. She became a Nationally Certified Massage Therapist, creating a small, successful private practice in Historic Roswell, Georgia. In 2011, Dee’s career in massage therapy ended when she experienced significant medical problems that were exacerbated by the physical demands of her massage practice. Greatly disappointed at having to close her independent business, but ever ambitious, Dee applied for, and was accepted into a Master Gardener Program, where she could rest and heal during these interesting and educational lectures. While exploring gardening books, Dee saw a colorful and detailed book on creating mosaic art. The artistic seed was planted, and has grown into a great passion. Initially self-taught in mosaic art, the quest for artistic knowledge deepened, and Dee traveled to Ciel Gallery in Charlotte, NC, in 2012 AND 2013, to receive instruction in mosaic art with renowned artists.
Currently, Dee enjoys the process of experimenting and finding her own style of mosaic art. She enjoys creating unique, one-of-a-kind garden mosaics, such as birdbaths, sculptural pieces containing floating candles, and steppingstones, where she uses waterproofing techniques and epoxy grout. Indoor mosaic art so far has included mirrors, picture frames, abstract wall art, mosaic boxes, a mosaic egg, and even a whimsical mosaic shoe. An experienced needlepoint artist for two decades, Dee is very fond of Art Nouveau and Arts & Crafts era art and architecture and she has completed highly detailed needlework, which is displayed throughout her home. In her garden mosaics, she is drawn to abstract expressionism and seeks to combine colors that might complement or highlight garden foliage, flowers, stones and textures, without competing with the gifts of nature. Dee named her mosaic art business “Black Cat Mosaics” after a beloved family pet (Johnny, the black cat) that continues to be mesmerized and intrigued when she creates mosaic art. He remains her #1 mosaic “helper.”
Dee is a member of the following mosaic organizations:
Society of American Mosaic Artists (SAMA)
Contemporary Mosaic Art (CMA)
Atlanta Mosaic Artists Guild
