Item Description
The Seismic Evaluation: Did you get a wakeup call from the Napa Earthquake? Then you should bid on this two-piece offer starting with a Seismic Evaluation of your Bay Area wood-framed home (retail $960) by Structural Engineer, Thor Matteson. Included is a thorough examination of all accessible crawlspace, basement and garage areas by a licensed structural engineer specializing in earthquake strengthening designs, and recommendations for strengthening the house. The evaluation is the first step toward an engineered earthquake retrofit design.
The Book: Your next step will be to add shear walls to your home, and you can find suggestions in Thor’s “Wood-Framed Shear Wall Construction – an Illustrated Guide” 2nd edition. (retail $45.00) “This book will not make you an engineer, but will introduce you to the five essential aspects in any shear wall, and present an introduction to earthquake retrofits for typical older homes in earthquake-prone areas —hopefully in time to prepare before the next devastating earthquake.”
About Thor Matteson: Thor has over 20 years of structural engineering experience and serves the Bay Area from his Berkeley office. He advises San Francisco’s Earthquake Safety Implementation Program, the Association of Bay Area Governments, and the California Earthquake Authority. Thor is a long-time Rebuilding Together volunteer providing his expertise for seismic retrofits for low-income homeowners.
*Thor’s next book, tentatively titled “Residential Earthquake Retrofits—a Practical Guide” is slated for release in October, 2014—the 25th anniversary of 1989’s Loma Prieta earthquake.
