Item Description
This beautiful glass vase was crafted by Bruce Pizzichillo and Dari Gordon, internationally known artists who create large, colorful hand blown glass vases, sculptural vessels and bowls as well as intriguing glass and mixed media sculptures. This April they were among only ten glass artists nationwide invited to participate in the Smithsonian Craft Show in Washington, D.C. In November their work will be exhibited in the prestigious Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show. Their ongoing commissions include a series of hand blown annual awards, now in its 15th year, for Proctor & Gamble.
Their distinctive color palette is made from various metallic oxide formulations containing gold, silver, cobalt and others.. Heated to 2,000 degrees the glowing, clear glass is a syrup-like. It is gathered onto the end of a five foot long steel blow pipe then blown, manipulated and shaped.
Drawing from glass images that they create in advance using different blowing and flameworking techniques, they apply patterns to the hot surface of the work before encasing them in one or more layers of molten clear glass, then blowing and stretching the piece to achieve a painterly effect.
“As artists/glassblowers we've designed many series of works using numerous techniques of color and pattern application to create images related to the vessel and its form. We've been producing glass in our Oakland studio since 1984.” That longevity makes the Pizzichillo & Gordon Studio Oakland's oldest glassblowing enterprise.
